Your OpenAI API key

Obiklip sends its AI work from your browser straight to OpenAI, using an API key of your own. A key is how Obiklip works, for every user. This page covers getting one, what OpenAI charges for, and what the app does with the key once you paste it.

What OpenAI charges for

OpenAI bills your own account for every transcription, analysis, translation and piece of post copy. Obiklip charges nothing for any of it and holds no credit of its own. All product features are free. Optional support does not include API usage.

Editing, subtitles and export happen on your computer and make no API requests at all, so they appear on neither bill. See Free use and optional support.

Getting a key

  1. Create an OpenAI project just for Obiklip.
  2. Add API credit and set a monthly budget and alerts.
  3. Create a project API key, ideally with an expiry date.
  4. Paste it into Obiklip under Settings and OpenAI, and press Save and test. The app asks for it the first time you analyse a video.

Where the key is kept

In IndexedDB inside the browser profile where you pasted it, separated by your Obiklip account. It is never sent to Obiklip, and the app does not display the saved value again. A short fingerprint is enough to tell two keys apart.

Testing the connection

Save and test, and Test connection after that, check both of the models Obiklip uses and send one tiny request, which costs a fraction of a cent.

Replacing or removing the key

Replace key puts a new key in place of the old one. Remove key forgets it in this browser, but the key keeps working at OpenAI until you revoke it there, and removing it does not cancel anything OpenAI has already billed.
