Getting started

What happens between installing Obiklip and having a clip on disk, in the order it happens. Each step has a page of its own if you want the detail.

1. Sign in

Open Obiklip and sign in with Google, or with an email address and a password. A new account is given 30 free minutes, which is enough for a full episode or a couple of shorter talks.

2. Bring in a recording

Drop a video file onto the window, use Open video, or paste a link into the bar at the top and let Obiklip fetch it. Obiklip reads the file where it already sits and never makes a copy of it.

Before anything is spent you are shown what was found - the length, the shape, the file - and asked which language is spoken. Choosing the language is worth the two seconds; it is more reliable than letting it be guessed.

3. Analyse it

Press Analyze Video. This is the step that spends minutes: as many minutes as the recording is long, rounded up. The cost is stated before the run starts, and the app stays usable while it works.

When it finishes you have a transcript of everything said, and a list of clips, the strongest first.

4. Go through the clips

Play them. Keep the ones that work, send the rest to Trash, and change anything you like about the ones you keep: where they start and end, the title, the words in the transcript.

5. Choose how they look

Per clip: the shape of the frame - vertical, square, portrait or wide - and the subtitle style, or no subtitles at all. What you see on the video is what gets rendered.

6. Export

Tick the clips you want, choose a folder and a quality, and export. Each clip is written as its own MP4 file. Exporting is free, so exporting the same clip again after changing your mind costs nothing.
