BYOK setup and licensing

BYOK means Bring Your Own Key. From 2.3.0, Obiklip BYOK lets you use your own OpenAI API key for transcription, clip discovery, translation and post copy. Buy the software once, then pay OpenAI separately for the AI you use.

What the license covers

The USD 35.00 license covers Obiklip BYOK 2.x and its maintenance releases on up to two computers. A future major version may be a paid upgrade. It includes no Obiklip processing minutes or OpenAI credit. You do not need an Obiklip account.

Set up the BYOK edition

  1. Download the BYOK installer from the download page. The PAYG installer uses an Obiklip account and processing minutes.
  2. Open BYOK and let the video tools setup finish.
  3. Enter the license key supplied after purchase and by email, then press Activate. Activation needs an internet connection.
  4. Under OpenAI key, paste your own API key and press Save and test. Follow the OpenAI key guide if you need a key.
  5. Once setup is ready, open a recording and follow Getting started from step 2.

Working with your own API account

The analysis screen lets you select an analysis model available to your key. OpenAI charges your account for AI requests, including new analyses, translations and post copy. Your usage cost depends on the model and work requested; the PAYG minute calculator does not estimate it. Reviewing saved results, manual editing and exporting files do not make AI requests.

Your key and your connection

Your API key is kept in macOS Keychain or Windows Credential Manager. AI audio and text go directly from your computer to OpenAI. Obiklip handles the software purchase and license activation. BYOK still needs internet access for AI work.

Move to another computer or recover a key

In Settings, open License and choose Deactivate this computer to free its activation. Set up the license and OpenAI key on the new computer. Projects and source recordings remain local; activating another computer does not sync them.

If you no longer have the computer or have lost your license key, open Manage your BYOK license and enter the email address used at checkout. The emailed management link lets you remove computers or replace the license key.

If setup fails

Activate the license before testing the API key. If the computer limit is reached, remove an old activation. For API errors, check the saved key, your OpenAI billing and model access, then use Test connection in Settings under OpenAI. Never send your API key or license key in a screenshot or support message.
