Your OpenAI API key

Obiklip BYOK sends its AI work from your computer straight to OpenAI, using an API key of your own. This page covers getting that key, what OpenAI charges for, and what the app does with the key once you paste it.

Only Obiklip BYOK asks for a key. If your copy of Obiklip is paid for in minutes, none of this applies - see Minutes and billing instead.

What OpenAI charges for

OpenAI bills your own account for every transcription, analysis, translation and piece of post copy. Obiklip charges nothing for any of it. Your Obiklip license includes no OpenAI credit, and a ChatGPT subscription is not API credit.

Getting a key

Create an OpenAI project just for Obiklip.
Add API credit and set a monthly budget and alerts.
Create a project API key, ideally with an expiry date.
Paste it into Obiklip under OpenAI key when the app asks you to set up BYOK, or later under Settings and OpenAI, and press Save and test.

Where the key is kept

On the computer you pasted it into, in your macOS Keychain or in Windows Credential Manager. It is never sent to Obiklip, and Obiklip cannot show it to you again, not even partly hidden. The app shows a short fingerprint instead, which is enough to tell two keys apart.

Testing the connection

Save and test, and Test connection after that, check both of the models Obiklip uses and send one tiny request, which costs a fraction of a cent. A test needs your Obiklip license to be active.

Replacing or removing the key

Replace key puts a new key in place of the old one. Remove key deletes it from your Keychain or Credential Manager, but the key keeps working at OpenAI until you revoke it there, and removing it does not cancel anything OpenAI has already billed.
